Finding the Fountain of Youth: Exploring the Myth of Florida’s Magical Waters

This exhibit examines how the legend of Ponce de Leon’s quest for restorative waters shaped the Sunshine State’s image as a land of fantasy, rejuvenation, and magical spring-fed waters. Rich in images, Finding the Fountain of Youth shows how the myths surrounding the discovery of “La Florida” influenced perceptions of the state that still echo today. The exhibit, partnered with nature photographer John Moran’s Springs Eternal: Florida’s Forgotten Fountain of Youth companion exhibit, was on display at Gainesville’s Florida Museum of Natural History until January 5, 2014.

The Finding the Fountain of Youth exhibit has also been displayed at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton, Bok Tower and Gardens in Lake Wales, and the Polk County History Center in Bartow. It is scheduled to be on display at the Orange County Regional History Center in downtown Orlando from June 4 to September 4, 2016.
